
How Weezer gave 500 lucky fans a custom free gift for their 30y anniversary Shop app merch drop

Overview
Weezer dropped a limited edition collection for their 30y anniversary. Their partner, Manhead Merch, manages their merch store. This was a special collaboration with Shopify where the limited edition drop would only be available on the Shop app.
Challenge
The Weezer, Manhead and Shopify team were looking to offer a free gift to the first 500 fans who bought a limited edition item. To do so, they needed the free gift, a limited edition surf wax bar by Sticky Bumps, to be added to cart automatically when four conditions were met:
- the shopper is buying on the Shop app
- the customer is in the United States
- the cart total is over $40
- the cart contains an item from the limited edition 30y anniversary collection
A drop creates a spike in traffic. This had to run automatically while the team manages all aspects of this drop.
Solution
Manhead Merch had worked with UpsellPlus before, to apply a free gift strategy for Green Day. They reached out and we configured a free gift with purchase that would be added automatically in checkout when the four conditions were met.
The team could limit the gifts to 500 by setting a stock of 500. UpsellPlus stopped added the item to cart once it's out of stock.
Results
Weezer had a successful launch and made 500 fans extra happy with limited edition surf wax. How cool!
